“Mindscape” World Red Cross Red Crescent Day Photo Exhibition

 

 

 

 
 
“Mindscape”-a photography exhibition event came into being for the first time to celebrate World Red Cross Red Crescent Day on 8 May, 2012 as an initiative by Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) occupying the assistance from International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The day long exhibition was a glance of significant humanitarian endeavours had been continuing over the last 40 years in Bangladesh by Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) as Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partner. The event took place at La Galarie of Alliance Francoise de Dhaka starting at 10:00am and ended at 09:00pm. The event of Photo Exhibition was set in order with an objective to exhibit the relentless effort by Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) had been prolonged for the service and the advocacy of the vulnerable since its inception in 1971. Moreover, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society has always been proactive in the area of disaster management and rehabilitation, even ensuring appropriate response during emergency due to disaster, where Bangladesh, as the worst victim of disaster, is stricken by various natural calamities almost every year. In primary concern, the event was purposive to commemorate the worthwhile accomplishments of Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners over the past years. The spectacular event was inaugurated by Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman, Chief Guest and former Chief Justice of Bangladesh Supreme Court and Chief Advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh where Prof. Dr. A.A.M.S. Arefin Siddiqui, the Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, joined as the special guest. At that time, the Hona’ble Chairman of BDRCS Prof. Dr. M.S. Akbar, MP, IFRC Head of Delegation Mr. Udaya Regmi and ICRC Head of Delegation were present. In inaugural speech, Justice Habibur Rahman said, “Bangladesh has reputation for its corruptibility, political argument, but we have the equality of coming to the aid of distressed people. I hope and believe that the photo exhibition will enhance the image of BDRCS and draw the attention of general public, particularly the donors who will extend their cooperation and support to BDRCS for rendering humanitarian support for the vulnerable.” The Special Guest, Prof. A.A.M.S. Arefin Siddique has communicated his urge, through his speech, to the international committee to declare 8 May as International Humanitarian Day on the ground that the very day marks the birth of great Sir Henry Dunant and Rabindranath Tagore, Noble Peace Prize laureate. Prof. Arefin expressed his desire that the day be celebrated globally with no warfare and violence. The work of disaster management and rehabilitation, carried out over the past years by the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement partners especially Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), has been depicted through placing 50 photographs during the exhibition. Award for five best photographs was announced by a panel of external judges and the panel was comprised with of 3 prominent photographers. Renowned photographer Chanchal Mahmud, Chief Potho Editor of the Daily Shakaler Kahbar Bulbul Ahmed and Photo Journalist Rafiqul Islam were the members of the panel. Considering the relevance with Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, Unit Affair’ department of BDRCS, Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) of BDRCS, Disaster Management program of BDRCS, Jean Jacques Kurtz of ICRC, and the Reuters were awarded respectively for the photographs entitled as Aftermath of the Landslide, Mobile Dissemination Techniques, Search and Rescue, Unloading Goods and We Care.
