Preparedness for Cyclone MAHASEN

  1. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) Response Coordination Centre has been activated round the clock. The coordination centre is in close contact with its coastal district branches with regard to alerting and updating/sharing the preparatory measures.

  2. NDRT roster has been updated. Out of 44 trained NDRT members, 34 are available to be deployed for emergency response.
  3. BDRCS is in progress to circulate a press release.
  4. BDRCS and IFRC joint teams will be placed in some region (Chittagong, Noakhali, Barisal) on the coast which are likely to be affected by cyclone to assist BDRCS concerned units in conducting rapid assessment and immediate relief activities.
  5. NFIs items for 5000 families are ready to be dispatched today.
  6. NDRT pool is on standby for any possible deployment
  7. BDRCS has formed 7 mobile medical teams to be deployed aftermath the landfall of cyclone
  8. IFRC together with BDRCS has been attending WASH, health and logistics clusters meeting.
  9. BDRCS attended the inter ministerial meeting on date 14 May, 2013.
  10. CPP technician teams have completed the minor repairing works of 6 HF radio stations.
  11. Shelter cluster meeting held on yesterday afternoon. The shelter cluster has updated 3 W (Who, where what) table and district focal agency for joint need assessment. Shelter cluster member agency shelter response capacity matrix has been updated.
  12. IFRC reviewed its joint stock position and kept 20 wakitalki ready to dispatch with emergency assessment team as and when required.
  13. The Humanitarian Country Task Team (HCTT) meeting held held on 14/05/2013 in the morning. The Government of Bangladesh updated the HCTT meeting yesterday. ´éº Cyclone was in static position and aprox. 1200 km away from Bangladesh coast. CPP implementation board meeting was held immediately after the signal 4 was hoisted. ´éº Total 49,365 CPP volunteers have been mobilized in the 13 coastal districts. They have alerted the fishermen for not going to deep sea. All the local disaster management committee meetings are taking place at district to union level. ´éº The Government has ensured the availability of emergency food (1 mt rice)and cash (100,000 bdt) in each of all coastal districts.´éº Direction have been given to evacuate people to safer place immediately after the signal 8 was raised. ´éº Around 100 portable water treatment is available with the government are ready to be used in supplying safe drinking water in case of need. ´éº Fire service and civil defense (FSCD) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be requested for responsibility of cleaning road, shifting injured personnel, dead body management. it is said that cyclone may not as big as cyclone Sidr. However, in any time it can take turn into big one. As per the meteorological office, the cyclone may hit Chittagong coast. Mr. Wazed, DG DMRD(Department of Disaster Management, Ministry of Disaster management and Relief) informed the meeting that if the cyclone Mahasen meets thresholds of cyclone Sidr and 91 catastrophic cyclone, the Government may launch appeal for international assistance. ´éº Other humanitarian clusters also updated the meeting about available stock position: ´éº USAID: 14 Water Treatment Plant with emergency food items. ´éº WHO/ Health Cluster: injury management and pregnancy health kits for 10,000 people, 6 water treatment plant, 5000 jerrican, 1 million WPT, liquid chlorine, in addition to that 25 emergency medical team have been formed. ´éº IFRC: 5000 jerrican, 10000 tent/ tarpaulins.
