World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2019 Celebrated

We have celebrated the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2019 with the theme ‘love’ to mark the birth anniversary of Jean-Henri Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. It is celebrated to pay tribute to the people helping people in need around the world.

Sheikh Hasina, Honourable Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, and Md. Abdul Hamid, Honourable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, have sent separate messages commemorating the day.

To celebrate the event BDRCS organised a seminar at the Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College auditorium yesterday. Hafiz Ahmed Mazumder, MP, chairman of BDRCS presided over the seminar, where Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq, MP, and Mr. Shah Kamal, senior secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief were present. Other guests, including, vice-chairman and senior board members of BDRCS, senior officials of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and partner national society representatives also joined the event.

Md. Feroz Salah Uddin, secretary general of the society, delivered the opening speech. He said: "Red Crescent currently has about a million volunteers countrywide who are ready to serve the nation in case of any emergency. We have served the people from Rakhine state of Myanmar living in Cox’s Bazar with relief and food, and also helped them find their lost family members who had been separated while escaping from Myanmar."

Joining as chief guest with us, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq, MP said: “The country's youth should be engaged in humanitarian activities.” He added, “Red Crescent has always been seen to stand by the affected people during any disasters in the country." He also shared, following a request by the vice-chairman of BDRCS Dr Md. Habibe Millat, MP, that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will help to finalise the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Act when drafting is finished. He appreciated BDRCS for the early preparedness to respond to the cyclone ‘Fani’.

As a recognition of the outstanding dedication and contribution towards the humanitarian efforts in Bangladesh, Ex-Chairman of BDRCS Mr. Sheikh Kabir Hossain has been awarded the ‘Red Crescent Award 2019’. He shared: “This award belongs to all staff and volunteers of BDRCS who are tirelessly working to alleviate the sufferings of the people in need.”

BDRCS organised an art competition for children, and awarded the winners from the them after the event.
