“Without volunteers, we are meaningless.”- Elhadj As Sy, IFRC Secretary General

July 10, 2019

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Secretary General Elhadj Secretary General visited Bangladesh to attend the Global Commission on Adaptation (GCA). He visited Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) and participated in an interactive session with the Red Crescent Youth volunteers. Elhadj As Sy delivered a speech and answered questions from the volunteers. BDRCS Chairman Hafiz Ahmed Mazumdar, MP, also gave a speech at the event.

“We have a wonderful moto that is serving humanity, we have a wonderful organisation with an emblem that is recognized by everybody, we have history which is unique. We are the only one who can say we are everywhere in 190 countries in the world.”

“But If there is no volunteer and there is no national society, we are meaningless. It is the true reality upon which the IFRC is grounded. And this is what makes us special,” says Elhadj As Sy to the volunteers.

Elhadj As Sy thanked the millions of volunteers, including Bangladesh Red Crescent’s youths, for their dedication and passion in serving humanity. “You could have done thousands of other things. You could have volunteered somewhere else, you could have spent your time having much fun, you could have done something else that brings more resource to you. But yet, you are here joining the Red Cross and Red Crescent. For that, I would like to salute you; for that, I would really like to thank you. Because the real thank goes to you,” he says to the volunteers.

After the keynote speech, the Secretary General answered questions from the volunteers. Later he joined a cultural event performed by the volunteers.
